Government launches consultation on local government reorganisation in Derbyshire

Residents, businesses and organisations across Derbyshire are being invited to have their say on proposals that could significantly change how local council services are delivered in the future.

The UK Government has opened a seven-week statutory consultation on local government reorganisation (LGR) in Derbyshire and Derby, which runs until 26 March.

The consultation forms part of a legally required process that must be completed before the Government can make any final decisions on how councils are structured in the area.

What is being consulted on?

The proposals set out options for reorganising local government, potentially replacing the current two-tier system of county and district councils with new unitary authorities.

This could affect how services such as education, highways, waste collection, planning, social care and housing are delivered in future.

The Government is seeking views on whether the proposed changes would:

  • Improve local services
  • Provide better value for money
  • Strengthen local accountability
  • Support economic growth and community needs

How this differs from last year’s consultations

This national consultation is separate from the two local public consultations that took place last summer.

Those earlier consultations were carried out by Derbyshire County Council and jointly by the district and borough councils alongside Derby City Council. Feedback from those exercises helped shape the proposals now being considered by Government.

The current consultation is statutory, meaning it is required by law before any reorganisation can be approved.

Who can take part?

Anyone can respond, including:

  • Local residents
  • Businesses
  • Community groups
  • Voluntary organisations

Responses will be considered by ministers before any final decisions are made.

How to respond

Full details of the proposals and the online response form are available via the Government consultation page.

The consultation closes on 26 March.
