Prapai Thai brings authentic flavour to Ilkeston

Ilkeston isn’t short of pubs or takeaways, but one of the newest additions to the town’s food scene is already standing out. Prapai Thai, based inside The Latch Lifter on South Street, has been steadily building a reputation for fresh, authentic Thai dishes that bring something very different to the local area.

A hidden gem inside a familiar local

At first glance, The Latch Lifter looks like your traditional Ilkeston pub – friendly atmosphere, a good pint, and plenty of regulars. But tucked inside is Prapai Thai, run by Daniel and Joy, who have turned part of the venue into a space serving up a full Thai menu for both eat-in and takeaway.

This setup means you can enjoy a proper freshly-cooked Thai meal alongside your favourite drink at the bar – or take it away to enjoy at home. For Ilkeston, that’s a winning combination.

What’s on the menu?

The menu is broad without being overwhelming, and everything is cooked to order. Starters include Golden Bags (crispy pastry parcels filled with seasoned meat and vegetables) and Thai Meatballs, both of which are packed with flavour and work brilliantly as a sharing plate.

Mains range from familiar dishes like Pad Thai and Green Curry, to more unusual options such as the Thai Pork Spicy Burger – a fusion dish that’s quickly become a customer favourite. The burger is juicy, fiery, and perfectly balanced, proving that Thai food can be just as good between a bun as it is in a wok.

For those who prefer something milder, dishes like Chicken Fried Rice or Sweet and Sour Chicken are excellent choices, showing the kitchen’s attention to detail even on the simplest plates.

Freshness and flavour

What sets Prapai Thai apart is the freshness. Every dish feels carefully prepared, using good quality ingredients, rather than rushed or reheated. The curries are fragrant and rich without being oily, the stir fries are crisp and colourful, and the flavours are layered in a way that shows real skill.

It’s clear that Chef Joy takes pride in every dish, and the presentation is consistently higher than what you’d expect from most takeaways. Even when boxed up to go, the food looks and tastes restaurant-quality.

Service with a smile

Service is another strong point. Daniel makes customers feel welcome straight away, happily explaining dishes and making recommendations, while Joy can often be seen popping out from the kitchen to say hello. That personal touch makes the experience memorable – and it’s part of why so many first-time visitors quickly become regulars.

Value for money

Prices are more than reasonable for the quality of food on offer. Portion sizes are generous, making it easy to share a spread of dishes with friends or family without breaking the bank. Compared to some of the larger chain takeaways in town, Prapai Thai offers far better value – both in taste and quality.

The verdict

Prapai Thai isn’t just another takeaway; it’s a proper addition to Ilkeston’s food scene. With fresh, authentic dishes, a warm welcome, and the bonus of being able to enjoy a pint alongside your Pad Thai, it’s a hidden gem worth shouting about.

Whether you’re after a quick bite on the way home, a sit-down meal with mates, or something new to liven up your Friday night takeaway, Prapai Thai at The Latch Lifter deserves a spot on your list.
