Select store to close in Ilkeston Albion Centre on Wednesday

The Select clothing store in Ilkeston’s Albion Centre will close on Wednesday, bringing an end to more than a decade of trading in the town centre.

The national fashion retailer, which has been based in the Albion Centre for over 10 years, has been a familiar presence for shoppers looking for affordable womenswear. In recent days, customers have noticed clearance activity in-store ahead of the closure, with Wednesday expected to be the final day of trading.

The closure reflects a wider national trend, with many high street chains scaling back or closing altogether as shopping habits continue to shift online and operating costs rise. Similar closures have been seen in town centres across the country.

At the same time, Ilkeston’s high street presents a more mixed picture. While several national chains have left in recent years, a growing number of independent traders continue to trade successfully, with locally run cafés, specialist shops and service businesses helping to sustain footfall.

Local residents and traders frequently highlight the importance of supporting independent businesses as a key factor in keeping Ilkeston’s high street active and resilient.

There has been no confirmation at this stage about any new tenants arriving in the Albion Centre.
