Bollards to be installed on Ilkeston Market Place following family’s safety campaign

New bollards will be installed on Ilkeston Market Place following a campaign by the family of Samuel Wilson to improve pedestrian safety.

Derbyshire County Council will install the barriers between the Sir John Warren and King’s Head pubs to restrict vehicle access.

Samuel’s family were told about the plans at a meeting this month with Cllr Charlotte Hill, the county council’s cabinet member for highways, and Cllr Simon Mabbott, who represents Ilkeston South and Kirk Hallam.

An update supplied to Ilkeston News says highways officers have been assessing different options since an earlier meeting with the family this year. Their work has focused on restricting vehicle access while accommodating the needs of local businesses.

Samuel, 26, was killed when a van was deliberately driven into a group of people on the Market Place on 16 December 2023.

His family have since campaigned for stronger protection for pedestrians. Their petition attracted 6,870 signatures and called for improved pedestrianisation and measures to prevent vehicles entering the Market Place.

Ilkeston News previously reported in September that the county council had committed to a physical barrier between the two pubs. The latest update identifies bollards as the planned measure and says the family have been informed.

Cllr Mabbott said: “This was a heinous crime that tragically cost a young man his life. We cannot undo what happened, but we can do everything within our power to make our town centres safer for residents and visitors.

“The installation of bollards at Ilkeston Market Place is an important step, but physical measures are only part of the solution. I am also a strong believer in the visible deterrent provided by an active police presence, supported by effective CCTV. People should be able to visit and enjoy our town centres feeling safe and secure.”

Ilkeston News will share the installation date when it is confirmed.
