A Liverpool-based mural artist known for his work during the city’s hosting of the Eurovision Song Contest has been commissioned to create new public artwork in Erewash.
Neil Keating recently visited sites in Kirk Hallam, Breaston and Petersham after being appointed by Erewash Borough Council as part of a wider street art initiative across the borough.
The artist is known for his large-scale “Sound of Freedom” mural created in Liverpool during the city’s hosting of Eurovision 2023, along with work for brands including Nissan, Deliveroo, PlayStation and Adidas.
Erewash Borough Council says the murals form part of a £100,000 investment into public artwork announced through its Erewash Investment Fund last year.
According to procurement documents published earlier this year, a total of 11 potential sites were identified across Ilkeston, Long Eaton and rural parts of the borough as part of a wider creative programme aimed at improving public spaces and boosting local pride.
However, only three sites had completed feasibility assessments and been approved for artwork at this stage – Kirk Hallam, Breaston and Petersham.
The procurement process for the project closed in March, with delivery expected to take place between April and September 2026.
Documents linked to the scheme also described ambitions to involve local communities through talks, workshops and creative activities, with organisers previously referencing links with painters, sculptors, writers and poets.
The council says local consultation will take place before final designs are chosen.
The murals are part of wider regeneration and public realm improvements funded through the council’s £6.5 million Erewash Investment Fund.
