Residents raise concerns after confusion over key Erewash Local Plan meeting

Residents following Erewash Borough Council’s emerging Local Plan have raised concerns over transparency and public participation after weeks of confusion surrounding a key meeting on the future of development across the borough.

The Local Plan is one of the most important documents produced by the council. It will help determine where future housing, employment land and infrastructure could be located across Erewash for years to come.

However, some residents say they have struggled to keep track of when crucial discussions would take place after different meeting dates were circulated in recent weeks.

References were made to meetings in both June and July, leading to uncertainty among residents and campaign groups closely following the process.

It has now been confirmed that an Extraordinary Council meeting focusing on the Local Plan will take place at Long Eaton Town Hall on Wednesday, 17 June, beginning at 7pm.

The meeting is open to the public and residents are welcome to attend and observe proceedings.

While many residents have welcomed the clarification of the meeting date, questions have also been raised about how members of the public can engage with the process.

Information provided by Erewash Borough Council confirms that anyone wishing to submit a formal public question for the meeting must do so by 5pm on Friday, 5 June.

However, the meeting agenda and supporting reports will not be published until the following week.

Several residents who contacted Ilkeston News said they felt this made it difficult to submit informed questions because they would not know exactly what reports, recommendations or proposals councillors would be considering when the deadline passes.

According to information provided by the council, public questions must be submitted seven clear working days before a meeting, while agendas are published five clear working days before the meeting.

The council’s procedure rules do not allow questions to be submitted once the deadline has passed, even after the agenda becomes publicly available.

The information also explains that questions can be submitted at any time, but where a deadline has been missed they may be considered at a future meeting instead.

The issue has prompted debate among residents interested in planning matters, with some arguing that agendas should be available before question deadlines close so that members of the public can make informed submissions.

Others have pointed out that the council is simply operating within procedures set out in its constitution and that the same rules apply to all council meetings.

The forthcoming meeting is expected to attract significant public interest given the importance of the Local Plan and its potential impact on communities across Erewash.
