Overall crime rate: slight fall, but still above average
The latest figures show that Ilkeston recorded an overall crime rate of around 94 crimes per 1,000 people in 2025.
That represents a small reduction compared with the previous year, when the town recorded around 98 crimes per 1,000 people.
Despite the decrease, Ilkeston’s crime rate remains significantly higher than the Derbyshire average, which currently stands at around 72 crimes per 1,000 people. This places Ilkeston at roughly 30% above the county level.
How Ilkeston compares within Derbyshire
CrimeRate UK categorises Ilkeston as a medium-sized town. Within that context, the latest figures continue to place Ilkeston among the higher-ranking towns in Derbyshire for overall recorded crime.
While some towns have crime rates closer to, or below, the county average, Ilkeston’s figures remain noticeably higher, despite the modest year-on-year improvement.
Violence and sexual offences: year-on-year reduction
Violence and sexual offences continue to make up the largest single category of recorded crime in Ilkeston.
- 2024: just over 2,100 incidents
- 2025: around 1,880 incidents
This marks a clear reduction in the number of recorded incidents in this category over the past year.
Although this drop contributes to the overall reduction in crime, violence and sexual offences still account for a substantial proportion of all recorded incidents in the town.
Other crime categories
Other offence types contributing to Ilkeston’s overall crime rate include:
- Antisocial behaviour
- Shoplifting and theft
- Criminal damage and arson
Some crime types, such as bicycle theft, remain relatively low and account for a small proportion of total recorded offences.
What the figures can – and can’t – tell us
Crime statistics record reported offences, not perceptions of safety or individual experiences. They do not show whether crimes are concentrated in particular streets or areas, nor do they indicate whether offences involve repeat offenders or people from outside the town.
However, they do provide a consistent way of tracking trends over time and comparing areas using the same methodology.
In Ilkeston’s case, the figures suggest a slight improvement compared with 2024, but also show that crime levels remain higher than the county average.
