Ilkeston driver guilty after crash left motorcyclist seriously injured

An Ilkeston driver has been found guilty of causing serious injury following a crash that left a motorcyclist with multiple fractures.

A jury at Nottingham Crown Court unanimously convicted Agnieszka Lason, 46, of Julian Close, Ilkeston, after a three-day trial.

The collision happened at a junction involving Westwick Street and Roberts Street – on 15 February 2023.

What happened

The court heard that Lason pulled out from Westwick Street and turned across the path of motorcyclist James Riley.

Prosecutors said Mr Riley had right of way and was travelling at around 30mph. He was described as clearly visible, wearing reflective clothing and a backpack with reflective strips.

As Lason’s vehicle entered the road, Mr Riley attempted to brake sharply to avoid a collision but lost control and crashed into the rear of the car.

He suffered multiple fractures and was taken to hospital, where he remained for 15 days.

Evidence heard in court

In interview, Lason said she had not seen Mr Riley before pulling out.

The prosecution argued that the standard of driving fell below what would be expected, stating the rider had been “there to be seen”.

They also rejected claims that Mr Riley had overreacted, telling jurors that explanation did not match the evidence.

Verdict and sentencing

Lason denied the charge but was found guilty by the jury in less than two hours.

She was granted bail and will be sentenced in June, with the judge requesting a pre-sentence report.

The court was told the offence was not among the most serious of its type – but that the injuries suffered by Mr Riley were significant.
