If you’ve ever driven into Ilkeston from Nottingham, you’ll have spotted it: the patch of grass in the middle of the roundabout next to Morrisons, affectionately known as “Gnome Island.”
How It Got Its Name
Back in 2015, a mystery gnome appeared in the middle of the roundabout. Nobody quite knows who started it – but the gnome quickly became a local landmark. Over time, more gnomes appeared, vanished, and re-appeared.
A Local Talking Point
What started as a bit of fun turned into a piece of Ilkeston folklore. Drivers would smile as they passed, kids would look out for new additions, and stories circulated about who was behind the gnome placements.
From Joke to Legend
Even when the gnomes disappeared, new ones always popped back up. “Gnome Island” became such a firm part of the local vocabulary that most people forget the roundabout has any other name.
More Than Just a Roundabout
Today, Gnome Island is part of Ilkeston’s modern identity – a quirky reminder of the town’s humour and character. It proves that sometimes, the smallest acts of mischief leave the biggest legacy.
