Exciting progress is being made at Bennerley Viaduct, where the long-awaited Visitor Centre is starting to take shape. Fresh images from inside the site offer the first real glimpse of what’s to come – and it’s clear the project will be a huge boost for the local area.
The Friends of Bennerley Viaduct and Broxtowe Borough Council have thanked the community for their patience, stressing that while the wait has been longer than expected, the result will be worth it. The Visitor Centre will serve as a hub for heritage, education and walking routes across the Erewash Valley.
Alongside the Visitor Centre, work continues on the new car park, which will provide 24 spaces including two EV charging points. Access will be via Shilo Way at Naphtha Kennels, also serving the planned Kimberley Means Business starter units being delivered by Broxtowe Borough Council.
The accessibility ramp – designed to make the viaduct fully accessible from all sides – is currently undergoing a rebuild. Safety issues were discovered during construction last year, and engineers have been carrying out detailed investigations and redesign work. The Friends have confirmed that once the ramp is ready, a full public announcement will be made across all platforms to confirm the opening date.
Plans are also advancing for a new community bridge across the River Erewash. Designed in timber and treated with fire-retardant material, the bridge will sit close to the viaduct and is currently subject to planning permission and Historic England approval.
Despite the challenges, the Friends remain optimistic that 2025 will be a landmark year. With the ramp, Visitor Centre and bridge all expected to be completed, it could mark the start of a new chapter for Bennerley Viaduct – one that secures its future as both a heritage icon and a hub for walking, cycling and community activity.
