Smalley Post Office set to relocate with major increase in opening hours

Post Office services in Smalley are set to continue, with significantly extended opening hours, following plans to relocate the branch to a nearby convenience store.

The move follows the resignation of the current postmaster at 35 Main Road. A new operator has now been appointed and has identified an alternative location to maintain services within the village.

New location confirmed

The Post Office has agreed to relocate Smalley Post Office to:

Premier Store
34 Main Road, Smalley
DE7 6EE

The new branch will be located approximately 250 metres from the current site, along mostly level ground.

Opening hours to increase significantly

The relocation will bring a substantial increase in availability for customers.

Current opening hours are:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00am to 1:00pm
  • Saturday and Sunday: Closed

Under the new arrangement, the branch will open:

  • Monday to Sunday: 8:00am to 9:00pm

This will provide 91 hours of service per week, compared with the current 20 hours, representing an increase of 71 hours.

Services and facilities

The new Post Office will operate from an open-plan counter within the Premier store, offering a wide range of services including:

  • Everyday personal and business banking
  • Cash withdrawals, deposits and cheque deposits
  • Mail and parcel services, including Parcelforce Express
  • Bill payments and top-up services
  • Travel money card services

Some services will differ from the current branch, although alternatives will remain available at nearby Post Offices where required.

Access and parking

Accessibility arrangements will include a portable ramp at the entrance, supported by a bell and signage. Inside the store, there will be a ramp with handrail, a hearing loop and space for wheelchair users.

Parking provision includes space for one vehicle at the side of the premises, with additional on-street parking available nearby.

Opening date to be announced

Final plans for the relocation are currently being completed. The Post Office has said that the opening date for the new branch will be confirmed in due course.

A spokesperson said the move is expected to maintain service provision locally while improving convenience and securing the long-term future of the branch.
