One of Ilkeston’s most recognisable landmarks has changed hands once again.
The former Ritz Cinema and Bingo Hall on South Street has been sold at auction, sparking fresh interest in what the future might hold for this much-loved building.
The Grade II listed art deco building first opened its doors in 1938 as the Ritz Cinema and later became a thriving bingo hall – a place filled with laughter, friends, and community spirit. It’s been part of Ilkeston’s skyline for generations, and though the lights have been out for some time, the affection for the building remains strong.
💷 A new chapter – or another waiting game?
The property recently went under the hammer with Pugh Auctions, selling for £202,500, well above its guide price of £125,000.
It’s not the first time the building has been sold – several owners have taken it on over the years, each with different ideas for its future. But as yet, no plans have come to life.
Inside, the building retains its grand layout: the sweeping auditorium, balcony seating, and foyer that once welcomed hundreds of cinema-goers. However, it’s in need of significant restoration after standing empty and facing vandalism.
🏛️ A historic landmark with modern potential
Because the Ritz is Grade II listed, any redevelopment will need to protect its heritage features – but that doesn’t mean it can’t have a new purpose.
Ideas over the years have ranged from a cinema revival and community arts venue to a restaurant hub or leisure space.
Whatever direction it takes, there’s a shared hope across the town that the building can once again bring people together and add energy to South Street’s growing mix of independent shops and cafés.

The future of the Ritz ties in closely with wider regeneration efforts across Ilkeston – from the transformation of Bath Street and the former Argos site, to ongoing investment in heritage and high-street projects.
If restored and reopened, the Ritz could become a true centrepiece of Ilkeston’s cultural and social life once again.
For now, the town waits to see what plans the new owner will bring forward – and there’s a sense of cautious optimism that this time, the story might have a brighter ending.
