Big Transport Conversation: What It Actually Means For Ilkeston

The Mayor’s Transport Team are coming to Ilkeston Library on Thursday 18 December (9:30am to 12:30pm) but a lot of people are asking:

👉 “What even is this Transport Plan?”
👉 “Why should I bother going?”

Here is a clear breakdown to help.

🚦 What is the Mayor’s Transport Plan?

It is a new transport strategy being created for the whole East Midlands covering Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

Instead of four separate transport plans that often do not match up, this creates one joined up plan for the entire region.

It will guide decisions and funding for the next 15 years, including:

  • Buses
  • Trains
  • Roads and potholes
  • Walking and cycling routes
  • Accessibility
  • Transport for young people, older people and people who do not drive
  • How towns connect to each other

This is a major piece of work and Ilkeston gets a say.

🚌 Why your voice matters

Transport is one of the biggest issues people raise locally:

  • Buses that do not turn up
  • Routes cut back
  • No direct links to places we need
  • Potholes and worn out roads
  • Lack of safe walking and cycling routes
  • Evening and Sunday services being poor
  • Difficulty getting to hospitals, colleges and jobs

The new plan could shape how money is spent, which routes are prioritised and what fixes are delivered first.

This is your chance to influence it.

📌 What you can do at the Ilkeston session

At the drop in event, you can:

  • Speak to the Transport Team directly
  • Highlight what does not work in Ilkeston
  • Say which roads or routes need attention
  • Explain issues with buses, traffic, safety or access
  • Pick up paper copies of the Transport Plan
  • Fill out the consultation survey in person

If you have ever said “The buses are rubbish”, “We need safer crossings”, or “This road is awful”, this is your chance to turn that into real input.

🚉 What this could mean for Ilkeston in the long run

While nothing is confirmed yet, the plan could influence:

  • Better bus reliability
  • More evening and Sunday services
  • Safer walking and cycling routes into town
  • Improved links to Derby, Nottingham and nearby towns
  • Stronger maintenance of key roads
  • Better access to jobs, schools, colleges and hospitals

Your feedback helps push Ilkeston up the priority list.
