Councillors will debate a proposal tonight that could see flowerbeds across Erewash reinstated and grass cutting increased after growing complaints from residents.
A motion going before Erewash Borough Council calls for the authority to return to pre-COVID maintenance standards, including bringing back flowerbeds and increasing the number of grass cuts each year.
The proposal states that while the council’s rewilding programme has been introduced to support wildlife, many residents have raised concerns about the impact on parks, verges and public spaces.
Councillors proposing the motion say they have received numerous complaints from residents about reduced maintenance and the appearance of public areas.
The motion asks the council to recognise the need to balance wildlife initiatives with maintaining spaces that residents use every day.
If approved, the council would be asked to:
- Reinstate flowerbeds across the borough to pre-COVID levels
- Increase grass cutting to at least 10 cuts per year
- Ensure parks, playing fields, verges and roundabouts are maintained more regularly.
The motion acknowledges that rewilding areas can play an important role in supporting biodiversity, but argues that recreational spaces also need to be properly maintained for residents.
Debate around grass cutting and wildflower areas has become increasingly prominent across the borough in recent years, with some residents welcoming the environmental approach while others say public spaces have become untidy.
The proposal will be debated at a Full Council meeting on Thursday evening, where councillors will decide whether to support the changes.

Please think very seriously people want to be proud to live in Ilkeston,we need to go back to how the garden s and park s looked pre COVID, last year everywhere looked so unkept and messy, I live near potters park, so disappointed with the council not cutting the grass, children couldn’t play or have picnics on it ,we had an amazing summer and had to go elsewhere please get Ilkeston back to how it was .
