Ilkeston man on trial accused of raping woman walking home from night out

An Ilkeston man has gone on trial accused of raping a woman who was walking home after a night out in the town.

Connor Evans, 21, of Kirkby Avenue, is charged with one count of rape relating to an incident alleged to have happened in the early hours of 23 June 2023. He denies the allegation and says the sexual activity was consensual and started by the woman.

Alleged incident

Nottingham Crown Court heard that the complainant, a mother in her 30s, had been drinking in Ilkeston before leaving the Harrow pub in Market Place to walk home to Sandiacre. She had no money, no phone battery and decided to make the journey on foot.

The court was told that some time later a couple were woken by loud knocking and shouting at their front door. When they opened it, they found the woman distressed, confused and crying. She reportedly ran inside their home and hid behind a sofa while asking them to call the police.

According to the prosecution, the woman said a young man had walked alongside her before she found herself on the ground with him on top of her. She then ran away and began knocking on doors for help.

Police investigation

Evans was arrested several days later. Prosecutors say a search of the address where he was living at the time uncovered the woman’s missing underwear under a pillow in his bedroom.

Prosecutor Sean Brunton KC told the jury the Crown believes Evans took advantage of a vulnerable woman who was walking home alone and heavily intoxicated.

Defendant’s account

Evans disputes the prosecution’s case. In interview he told officers that the woman willingly engaged in sex with him and that she made the first move. He denies using any force.

Trial ongoing

The trial is expected to continue throughout the week. The jury will hear further evidence before reaching a verdict. Ilkeston News will provide updates when the court allows further reporting.
