A prolific shoplifter who repeatedly breached a court order by stealing from shops in Ilkeston has been jailed.
Haig Meads, 33, was subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) imposed on 1 December 2023, which banned him from entering several Ilkeston stores, including Boots and the Co-op, following a series of thefts.
Despite the order, Meads went on to breach its conditions on multiple occasions between 21 October and 1 December this year by committing further shop thefts – including returning to Boots, one of the premises he was banned from.
The offending continued after the original CBO expired. Between 1 December and 10 December, Meads carried out additional thefts at shops in Ilkeston, targeting Tesco on Rutland Street and Boots on Bath Street. Items stolen included Christmas gift sets, electric shavers and a television.
On 11 December, Meads attended Ilkeston police station and handed himself in. He was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with six shop thefts and breaching the terms of his Criminal Behaviour Order.
Meads, who is of no fixed address, admitted the offences when he appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on 13 December.
Magistrates sentenced him to 24 weeks in prison.
The court also imposed a new two-year Criminal Behaviour Order, banning Meads from entering Boots, Co-op and Tesco Extra. The order also includes a condition preventing him from remaining in any retail or commercial premises in Derbyshire if asked to leave by staff, security staff, police officers or PCSOs.
