Shop Closed After Trading Standards Seize Thousands of Illicit Cigarettes in Ilkeston

A shop in Ilkeston has been closed after a joint operation uncovered thousands of illicit cigarettes and tobacco products hidden inside the premises.

Neighbourhood policing officers worked alongside Derbyshire County Council Trading Standards at a shop on South Street earlier today as part of an enforcement operation targeting illegal tobacco sales.

During the visit, officers discovered a large quantity of illicit cigarettes and tobacco concealed behind the shop counter and within a false wall. Further illegal products were also found inside the shopkeeper’s vehicle.

The vehicle has since been seized, and the shop has been closed while further investigations are carried out.

Illegal tobacco is often linked to organised crime and can undercut legitimate local businesses. Trading Standards officers say such products may also pose health risks, as they bypass safety checks and regulations.

Residents who have concerns about suspected illegal activity in their area are encouraged to report it. Information can be passed on to Derbyshire Police via:

  • Live Chat (24/7) – through the Derbyshire Police website
  • By phone – calling 101
  • Crimestoppers – anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online via Crimestoppers

Anyone reporting information can do so confidentially, and reports may help protect the community and local traders.
