Ladywood Primary School Marks 60 Years Since Opening

Ladywood Primary School has marked 60 years since it first opened its doors in 1966, celebrating six decades at the heart of the Kirk Hallam community.

The school was established during a period of significant housing growth across Ilkeston and the surrounding area. As new estates were developed in the 1960s, demand for local school places increased, leading to the creation of new primary schools to serve expanding communities – including Ladywood.

To mark the anniversary, pupils and staff took part in school celebrations this week, recognising both the school’s history and its continuing role today.

Over the past six decades, Ladywood Primary has educated generations of local children and adapted to wide-ranging changes in education, from curriculum reform to evolving approaches to inclusion, safeguarding and pastoral care.
One notable feature of the school’s history is its leadership stability. In 60 years, Ladywood Primary has had just three headteachers, a level of continuity that is increasingly rare in modern education and reflects long-term commitment to the school and its community.

Today, the school provides education for children aged three to eleven, including nursery provision, and is part of the Embark Multi Academy Trust, which supports schools across Derbyshire. The school is led by Executive Headteacher Melanie Lawson.

While buildings, teaching methods and national education policy have changed since 1966, Ladywood’s role as a focal point for local families has remained constant.

As the school enters its seventh decade, the anniversary offers a moment to reflect on its past – and on the thousands of pupils, staff and families who have been part of Ladywood’s story over the last 60 years.
