Teenager jailed after sending death threats weeks after release from prison

A 19-year-old woman has been jailed after sending death threats to another woman just weeks after being released from prison.

Chelsie Brett, of Dovedale Circle, Cotmanhay, Ilkeston, had been released from custody at the end of October after serving a sentence for being in possession of a knife in May this year.

As part of her release, Brett was on licence and subject to strict conditions, including not contacting a woman known to her. That woman was the same person Brett had gone to meet when she was found carrying the knife earlier this year.

Despite those conditions, on November 23 Brett sent a series of WhatsApp messages to the victim. One of the messages read: “Your dead you wait.”

Police arrested Brett, and while in custody she went on to punch a police officer in the face.

She was subsequently charged with harassment, making threats to kill, and assaulting a police officer.

Brett admitted all offences and was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. The court also imposed a five-year restraining order to protect the victim.

PC Jo Bramhall, the officer in the case, said:

“Brett targeted her victim and went on to offend against her again despite having licence conditions not to contact her.

“She showed no remorse towards the victim, despite admitting what she had done, and blamed the victim for the offences.

“The victim was left scared, fearing that Brett might carry out her threats.

“While in custody Brett was quick to resort to violence and assaulted a police officer.

“Although still just a teenager, at 19-years-old, Brett has shown the potential to become a dangerous young woman and it is absolutely right that she is returned to prison.”
