Visitors to Shipley Country Park are being urged to take extra care after a confirmed case of avian influenza (bird flu) was identified at Mapperley Reservoir.
The affected bird, a Canada goose, was found at the reservoir, prompting park authorities to introduce precautionary measures to protect wildlife, pets and visitors.
Temporary measures now in place
To help limit the spread of the disease, visitors are asked to follow this guidance while visiting the park:
- Do not feed birds anywhere in the park
- Keep dogs away from ponds and lakes and do not allow them to enter the water
- Wash hands and clothing thoroughly if you have been in close contact with wild birds before visiting other areas or interacting with pets
Clear signage has been installed around the park to highlight these measures, and visitors are being asked to respect them while work continues to safeguard local wildlife.
Risk to the public remains very low
The UK Health Security Agency has advised that avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds and that the risk to human health is very low.
