Ilson Gnome Hits the Big Time – Billboard Unveiled in Ilkeston

Ilkeston’s very own mischief-maker has gone from roundabout resident to billboard star.

Yes, you read that right – Ilson Gnome has made his biggest appearance yet, thanks to a new partnership with local business Aquarius Home Improvements.

The giant advert, which went up this week, can be spotted on one of Ilkeston’s busiest routes and features the cheeky red-hatted gnome in all his glory. It’s a first for the town – a local community character securing a prime billboard spot – and it’s already turning heads.

“I nearly choked on me mint imperial when I saw it from the bus,” joked one local on social media. “Ilson’s skyline has definitely had an upgrade.”

Who is Ilson Gnome?

For those who don’t already follow his adventures online, Ilson Gnome was “discovered” on Gnome Island – the small but well-loved roundabout at the junction near Morrisons. Since then, the bearded character has grown into something of a local celebrity, with over 10,000 followers across social media.

From Glastonbury Festival appearances to cheeky campaigns about Ilkeston’s parks, flowerbeds, and even its potholes, Ilson Gnome has become a voice for both humour and community pride.

The gnome’s creator has always kept the project community-minded, using it to celebrate Ilkeston’s quirks, highlight local causes, and bring people together through laughter.

A Community Collaboration

The billboard itself was made possible through a collaboration with Aquarius Home Improvements, a long-standing Ilkeston business specialising in bathrooms and kitchens. The team worked directly with the gnome to bring the idea to life.

Ilson Gnome himself was quick to thank the company, posting online:

“Massive thanks to Aquarius – not only for letting me hog a billboard, but for being lovely to work with.”

Why It Matters

Beyond the fun, the billboard represents something bigger. It shows how local businesses and creative projects can work together to boost community spirit – and prove that Ilkeston can do things with a sense of humour and style.

It’s also a reminder to support independent local companies. As Ilson Gnome put it:

“Shop local, ducks – it keeps our town thriving.”

What’s Next?

Rumour has it this might not be the gnome’s last big appearance. With plans for more collaborations, events, and even festive mischief, Ilson Gnome looks set to continue putting Ilkeston on the map in his own unique way.

For now, keep an eye out next time you’re passing – and don’t forget to give him a wave.
