Ilson Gnome has set out plans for a permanent feature at Gnome Island, marking a potential new chapter for one of Ilkeston’s most distinctive landmarks.
The proposal would look at installing a lasting structure on the traffic island that reflects its story and community significance, while meeting all relevant safety and highways requirements.
Although at an early stage, the plans build on a movement that has grown steadily over time.
From roadside novelty to recognised name
When garden gnomes first began appearing on the newly created island on Nottingham Road, Ilkeston, many assumed the idea would be short-lived.
Instead, the display gradually became a familiar sight. The name “Gnome Island” entered everyday conversation, and what began as an informal gesture developed into a shared local reference point.
Formal recognition followed after a petition, submitted in the name of Ilson Gnome, was approved by councillors – officially designating the roundabout as “Gnome Island”.
The decision acknowledged something that had already taken root within the community.
A character that continued to grow
In its early days, Ilson Gnome was widely viewed as a bit of fun – a passing idea that brought a smile.
Over time, however, the character expanded beyond the island itself. Through social media, community campaigns and support for local businesses and charities, Ilson Gnome became associated with a broader message of civic pride.
The following has since grown well beyond the town, attracting supporters nationally and internationally. Recent billboard appearances and public features have further raised the profile of the character.
Supporters say that continued presence is what gives the latest proposal weight.
Looking ahead
Those involved say the aim is not to change what Gnome Island represents, but to safeguard it for the future.
A permanent installation will need to comply with visibility, safety and maintenance standards, and discussions with relevant authorities are expected before proposals are finalised.
