Care home in Ilkeston wants to expand – here’s what’s planned

A care home in Ilkeston has submitted plans to expand, with proposals that would see eight new bedrooms added and the building made significantly larger.

The application relates to Oliver House, on Oliver Road, a long-established care home in Kirk Hallam. If approved, the development would increase the total number of bedrooms from 26 to 34, alongside new shared lounge and dining areas.

Supporters of the scheme say it would help meet growing demand for care places locally. Others may want to take a closer look at how the expansion could affect the surrounding area.

What would actually change?

The plans show a sizeable extension added to the existing building. While the care home would stay on the same site, the overall footprint would grow, making it a much more prominent building than it is now.

Design documents say the new parts of the building would use light-coloured brick and render, with dark grey windows and doors, intended to blend in with the current care home.

Parking and access

Parking is often a concern with developments like this, especially on residential streets.

According to the application, the number of parking spaces on site would increase from six to ten, with additional spaces for disabled users, staff and visiting vehicles, as well as designated space for ambulances and servicing.

Why this matters locally

Care provision is a sensitive issue for many families in Ilkeston, particularly as the population ages and pressure on health and social care continues to grow.

At the same time, nearby residents may have questions about the scale of the extension, extra traffic, and how the development could change the feel of the area around Oliver Road and Ladywood Road.

What happens next?

The plans are now with the council and will be reviewed by planning officers. Local residents can view the proposals and submit comments before a decision is made.

Ilkeston News will keep an eye on the application and bring you any updates.
