Repairs proposed for historic King George Building at Ilkeston academy

Repairs are being proposed to help protect one of Ilkeston’s historic school buildings.

An application has been submitted to Erewash Borough Council seeking Listed Building Consent for a programme of repairs to the King George Building at Ormiston Ilkeston Academy on King George Avenue.

The building, which forms part of the school site, is Grade II* listed – a designation given to particularly important buildings of more than special interest.

According to documents submitted with the application, the proposed works are intended to repair and protect elements of the historic structure while preserving as much of the original fabric as possible.

The plans include:

  • Concrete and brick repairs to the roof turrets
  • Repairs or replacement of rainwater goods
  • Repairs to internal concrete roof soffits
  • Application of a protective coating to the concrete dome roof

A heritage statement submitted with the application explains that the works are designed to maintain the building’s historic character while addressing areas of deterioration and preventing further damage.

Technical reports submitted as part of the application highlight a number of structural defects within the roof slab soffits, including areas where concrete has cracked, delaminated or begun to deteriorate. In some locations reinforcement bars have also been exposed due to corrosion.

The proposed repairs are intended to stabilise these areas and help extend the life of the structure while retaining as much of the original materials as possible.

Because the building is listed, Listed Building Consent is required before the works can proceed.

Residents who wish to comment on the proposals can submit representations to Erewash Borough Council.

Comments should be made quoting Planning Application 2026/0076 and must be received by 18 March 2026.
