Families living with severe food allergies often miss out on the simple joys many of us take for granted – popping out for breakfast, joining community events, or letting the kids tuck into festive treats without worry.
This December, a local support group is stepping in to change that.
Ruth and Sarah, who run Ay Up Duck – Kids’ Food Allergy Support, are hosting a free, fully allergy-safe Santa Breakfast on Friday 13 December, 9.30am to 11.30am right here in Ilkeston.
The event has been created specifically for children who usually have to sit out of Christmas activities due to the very real risks of severe allergic reactions and cross-contamination. Many families in this situation feel isolated – especially at this time of year – and the organisers wanted to give them something magical where they can finally relax.
What families can expect
Allergy-friendly treats in a carefully controlled, welcoming environment A special visit from Santa Christmas crafts and fun activities A relaxed morning where parents don’t have to constantly worry about safety
The morning is fully funded through Crowdfunder support and contributions from several online food companies. Both organisers hold enhanced DBS checks and have completed safeguarding training.
Ruth told Ilkeston News she hopes the event will give children “a festive experience where they feel safe, understood and included – something many families rarely get.”
